The Mets made the first addition to their starting rotation, as they reportedly reached agreement on a two-year contract with the right-hander. Frankie Montas.
The contract, which was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, is worth $34 million and is pending a physical.
According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, the second year of the pact will be an option for the players.
Montas is coming off an up-and-down campaign in which he pitched to a 4.84 ERA and 1.36 WHIP while striking out 148 batters and walking 66 in 30 outings with the Reds and the Brewers.
He signed with the Reds in the offseason, then was traded to Milwaukee before the deadline.
The year before, the right-hander made just one appearance with the Yankees while sitting out most of the season before being forced to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder.
The hope is that by enrolling Montas in the Mets pitching lab, they can help him return to the dominant form he showed during his years with the Oakland Athletics, such as his spectacular 2021 season during which he finished sixth in the American League. Young people vote.
There will certainly be further additions over the coming months, but as currently constructed it will join Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Taylor MegillAnd Paul Blackburn into the mix in the Mets’ starting rotation.
